Veytharisch - writing system
Writing tradition
- Veytharisch uses the same basic script tradition as Veyrathi and can be documented with the same Latin working romanization.
- In contrast to Veyrathi, sound reduction in Veythar is made more visible in the orthography.
- Historically long compounds are often separated with a hyphen in the modern standard if the word boundary would otherwise be difficult to recognize.
Basic principles
- Root accent is almost always on the first lexical syllable.
- Unstressed vowels are often reduced to a weak
eand written that way. - Many finite verbs appear in a more concise form than their dictionary entries.
- The writing is more conservative than everyday language, but less conservative than standard Veyrath writing.
Grapheme conventions

|---|---|---|
ae | /ae/ | open front vowel |

ou | /ou/ | rounded diphthong |
sh | /sh/ | voiceless postalveolar fricative sound |

kh | /x/ | rough velar fricative sound |
dh | /dh/ | soft dental fricative sound or approximant |
th | /th/ | voiceless dental fricative sound |

Word image and separation
- Nouns can have significantly more final consonants than in Veyrathi.
- Common syllable form:
(C)(C)V(C)(C). - Hyphens primarily mark solid compounds or deliberately preserved double roots:
kevar-ethret-talsea-var
Emphasis
- Standard rule: first full root syllable
- Prefixes such as
ret-,il-anduth-usually do not carry a main accent - In formal speech, the final bar can be given secondary emphasis, especially in oaths and council minutes
Difference to Veyrath spelling
- Veyrathi prefers open, clearly readable syllables.
- Veytharisch often writes down reduced endings and shortened words.
- This makes many cognates look tighter, harder and more compact:
veyra->veirenseyrath->seireththalor->thal
