Veyrathi - Place names

Purpose

This file specifies a productive system for Veyrathian place names. She should:

  • Systematize the names of landscapes and bodies of water
  • Make settlement and infrastructure names plausible
  • make historical deep layers from Ur-Veyatic and Old-Veyata usable
  • make western or Veytharian-influenced variants predictable

Initial situation

There is already enough material for toponymy:

  • right thinking in the composition
  • a stable sound profile for new lexemes
  • many local and landscape roots
  • historical precursors for older layers of names
  • Western phonetic equivalents for contact and boundary forms

Toponyms therefore do not have to be invented freely, but can be built systematically from the existing vocabulary.

Basic principles

1. Right-headedness

As in the general lexicon, the last link is the core:

  • Norel-talen = City on the river
  • Meral-vilar = mountain village
  • Feyan-verun = Seaport

2. Three main layers

Place names usually come from three layers:

  • Hereditary toponyms: old, often monosyllable or two-syllable names that come directly from landscape words or ancient roots Examples: Meral, Senel, Verun
  • descriptive compounds: transparent, modern names based on location type, function or location Examples: Kethar-talen, Norel-miral, Ravath-vilar
  • historical or mythical names: older, less transparent names with Ur-Veyatic or Old-Veyatic depth or with reference to myth and council history Examples: Avar-talen, Syra-norel, Thalar-karen

3. Place names are semantically clearer than personal names

Veyrathi prefers high readability in place names:

  • Location
  • Function
  • Landscape
  • route
  • institutional role

And less:

  • pure dynastic logic
  • bare patronymics
  • opaque phonetic ornaments

4. Old forms can be harder

In the everyday lexicon, Veyrathi is very smooth. Older remains may be retained longer in toponyms:

  • -ar, -un, -el, -en remain well in old place names
  • old diphthongs or heavier word edges can remain fossilized
  • this is especially true for rivers, coasts, mountains, harbors and old council places

Productive toponym heads

With the following series, Veyrathi now has a good thirty plausible place heads. In everyday life, around 14 to 16 of them are highly productive; the remaining heads are regionally, institutionally or professionally specialized. This corresponds quite well to what real languages show between the core inventory and the expansion inventory.

  • The talen, vilar, verun, norel, meral, doren, senel, selun, selar, kavar are particularly highly productive. vethor, karen, miral, jeren and kethar.
  • Medium productive are lonath, talem, noren, drun, kovath, thalor and muren.
  • Highly specialized but culturally important are garun, orven, janakor, niva, jorath, lavin and in large area names naar.

Historical layers

Ur-Veyatic

Ur-veyatic toponyms are particularly useful for:

  • Rivers
  • Coasts
  • Mountains
  • old council and harbor towns
  • cult or epic landscapes

Features:

  • slightly heavier word edges
  • clearer r and n finals
  • occasionally archaic diphthong or full old stem formSuch names may be preserved directly in modern Veyrathi or may live on only slightly smoothed.

Old Veyata

Alt-Veyata is the best source for:

  • old market and council towns
  • supra-regional trading locations
  • historical Koine names
  • fuller, but still easily legible local forms

Features:

  • more open full shapes than in the West
  • more old ending syllables than in the modern standard
  • very suitable for older city and institution names

Modern Veyrathi

Modern names prefer:

  • transparent composition
  • clear two or three syllables
  • functional readability

This is the default layer for:

  • new cities
  • Quarters
  • Transport locations
  • modern port and station names

Western and Veytharian influenced variants

In western contact zones these tendencies often apply:

  • ey -> ei
  • open ending syllables become scarcer
  • -ath -> -eth
  • some old cores are shortened: kethar -> keth, toren -> tor

This means that western parallel forms can emerge from a Veyrathian place name without having to invent a completely new name.

Typical place name types

1. Direct inheritance toponyms

An old landscape word becomes a place name:

  • Meral
  • Senel
  • Verun
  • Naar

This is particularly suitable for:

  • ancient mountains
  • old ports
  • Coastal strip
  • Forest areas

2. Descriptive settlement names

Pattern:

  • [Landschaft] + talen
  • [Landschaft] + vilar
  • [Funktion] + talen
  • [Qualitaet] + verun

Examples:

  • Norel-talen
  • Meral-vilar
  • Kethar-talen
  • Savir-verun

3. Functional locations

Pattern:

  • [Rolle/Funktion] + [Platz/Bau/Route]

Examples:

  • Thalor-karen
  • Ravath-drun
  • Vethan-jeren
  • Sirath-vethor

4. Mytho-historical names

Pattern:

  • [Mythosname] + [Toponymkopf]
  • [archaischer Stamm] + [Toponymkopf]

Examples:

  • Avar-talen
  • Syra-norel
  • Eran-meral
  • Ilyr-selar

5. Fossilized hybrid forms

Some names remain semi-transparent:

  • old basic word remains
  • new town header is added
  • Western variant only shortens a part later

Examples:

  • Kethar-talen -> western Keth-talen
  • Toren-karen -> western Tor-karen
  • Sirath-meral -> western Sireth-meral

6. Places of Origin and Institution

Pattern:

  • [Funktion] + janakor
  • [Zustaendigkeit] + orven
  • [Netz/Ort] + niva

Examples:

  • Ravath-janakor
  • Vethan-orven
  • Talen-niva

The specialized elaboration for children's house and janakor names follows in the additional module 18_Kinderhausnamen.md.

Naming motifs

Toponyms become most plausible in Veyrathi when they bear one of these motifs:

  • Landscape: river, forest, mountain, valley, field
  • Function: market, council, port, gate, bridge
  • Location: far, near, above, below, inside, outside
  • social origin and institution: children's home, archive, guard, workshop, control center
  • History: founding, binding, judgment, protection, departure
  • Myth: Avar, Eran, Syra, Ilyr and cosmological old words

Less typical are:

  • long patronymic rows
  • pure ruler eponyms with no reference to function or landscape
  • openly Saithan everyday place names

Saithan influence

Saithanic can affect place names, but not as a default layer for normal settlements. It is particularly plausible for:

  • Observatories
  • Central archives
  • old teaching houses
  • Codex and chancellery districts
  • sacred or learned complexes

Normal cities, villages, rivers and ports generally remain built in Veyat style.

Quick rules for new place names

  1. First determine the location type: River, bank, mountain, forest, village, city, place of residence, farm, work place, harbor, square, bridge, path, gate, border, pass, control center.
  2. Then select the core: norel, lavin, noren, meral, doren, senel, selun, selar, vilar, talen, lonath, talem, verun, drun, rimen, garun, orven, janakor, karen, miral, vethor, muren, jeren, niva.
  3. Add a determiner: Landscape, function, location, history or myth.
  4. Check readability: The name in Veyrathi should remain fluid and not appear overloaded.
  5. Decide the shift: Hereditary toponym, Old Veyata full form, modern compound or western contact form.

Work note- The material is already sufficient for a larger toponymy of East and West areas.

  • The next sensible expansion step would be a regional place name register according to: Coastal areas, river valleys, council towns, border markets, space infrastructure.
